 Pre-production | Day 3

Today we watched the beginnings of some coming of age indie films, like "The Way Way Back and "500 Days of Summer". We only watched the first 2 minutes so we could see what our film will need to consist of. One thing that we all liked in the beginning of "The Way Way Back" was the opening title scene sequence which we found interesting and something that would like to replicate for out own opening sequence.

This is a shot of what the opening title sequence looks like, with a lack background and then having the  letting see through with a clip  playing in the background. We messed around on Final Cut Pro and there was a template for a title sequence which we will use because it looked very similar and it was what we wanted.

We will also need to see if we can lower the capacity of the black background, to make the opening sequence more interesting instead of just having a plain black background. We will need to see if we can do this in Final Cut and to see if we are able to place a clip behind it so we don't go over our 2 minute time limit.
We all liked this title sequence because we thought it was simple and affective for our type of genre that we are going to base our film on.  In the background we are going to have the sea instead which we will need to try out in Final Cut pro.

Hey

    Film Distribution

    • - What is film distribution?
    -  Film distribution is the process of when a movie is available to watch by anyone.
    • Who distributes films normally in the UK?
    - The UK has 6 main distributors

    • - Is this different from the vertical integration model followed by the major film studios?
    - It is when the three stages are seen as part of the same larger process, under the control of one company.

    • - What steps are the three steps of distribution?
-Once the film has been  made, this is when they can start to work on the films release strategy. Then the distributers can then secure the screening of the film within the cinemas.

    • - What are the major decisions made during the marketing of a film?
    - The two main decisions when marketing a film are when they need to set a release date in a light week so they have more screen space. Then they need to invest in the materials and the marketing campaign to support it.

    • What is P&A? And why is it important?
    - P and A stands for Print and advertising. It is important

    •  How is digital technology revolutionising the process of film distribution & marketing?

    Storyboard

Here is the storyboard that we have drawn as a group. We all sat around a table and discussed what we needed to go into each box of our story. We knew we wanted to start with a shot of the waves

which we thought will be a good way to start the begging of the film. From the help of Nick King who came in and talked to us and help us and give us ideas for out film, said that using loads of close ups of the actors face to make the audience feel awkward.

Nick also said that we need to cut to black at a certain point in order to crate a flash back. At this point the music if we are going to add music will need to end as soon as the cut to black starts.

Then after the beach scene we are going to shoot at the grandparents house. At this point Chester is going to be unpacking his stuff out of the car and into the house. We are going to have different shot types from this point from Chester taking his stuff out of the car and then walking into thee house. In this scene this is when Chester finds the rugby ball which is when he has another flashback which reminds him  of his parents before they died in the car crash which is why he is now going to live with his parents.

In the next scene this is when Chester is going to get the phone call from the hospital saying that his parents have been in a fatal car crash.  At this point in time there will be a rugby ball some where which will cause him to think about his parents. After this the screen will cut to black to add suspense. We will also need to add some dialogue into this scene as well when Chester is responding to the other caller. Also Nick said that who ever is acting is going to need to be able to do good facial expressions especially when he has realised that his parents have just been in car crash.
    Friday 21st November
Today we started to think of all the different aspects of the film like the location and the setting etc. So we started off by creating a spider diagram and with each branch has something different that we needed to think off. For example in one of the legs or branches we had the setting and the location in where we are going to shoot our film.

    Target Audience

A coming-of-age film is normally targeted at a teenage audience, as the characters are usually teenagers and the audience find it easy to relate to the characters. Themes of the genre include relationships, drugs, sex, stress, home life. The inclusion of explicit and controversial themes means the certificate of the film would be either a 12 or 15, depending on the vulgarity of the film.

    Steve Neale’s

Steve Neale’s perception is that “genres exist within the context of a set of economic relations and practices”. He says that “genres are not the product of economic factors as such”, and “the conditions provided by the capitalist economy account neither for the existence of the particular genres that have until now been produced, nor for the existence of the conventions that constitute them”. For example in a new episode of a crime every episode has something different or story line like a death or someone goes missing. This happens so it can keep the audience into watching more and not getting bored because of the same story line.

    Todorov
Todorov’s narrative theory states that most story’s or plot lines follow the same pattern or path
which has 5 steps. The first part of the story will display a happy part. Then the second part will
display a problem or something bad will happen. The third part is when every starts to realise
what has happened in which starts chaos. The fourth part is when the characters attempt to
solve the problem. The last part is when the problem is resolved and every can be normal
    again.

    Day 1 - 14/11/14

    Pre Production

After I had gotten into my group the first thing we did was came up with a spider diagram which had all the different film, genres on  so we could come up with some ideas in what type of genre we wanted to work on.  As you can see we wrote down all the genre types on each branch and then came up with different ideas in what each genre would include. For example for a thriller we had the idea of having a chase scene or including a detective. After some time and writing down different ideas we drifted towards the Indie genre because we had the most ideas for it and we thought it would be the best for us.

Then we starting to write think of some good Indie films like 'The kings of Summer' and 'The spectacular now' and 'The Way Way Back'. This meant we could get ideas from the beginning of other films which could give us more ideas for our own opening.  We also started to write down some ideas of our opening could be about. We had the idea of a boy on a beach standing in the water and then having a narrator saying how he got there etc.
