Watching Love Thy Neighbor

Love Thy Neighbor is a TV show based around a suburban white working class couple that live in Twickenham and are trying to get used to have a black couple as there new next door neighbors. This TV show was popular because it was on at the time when Britain recently arrived population of black immigrants.

My first reaction to when I watched the first episode was the words that they used are very different from today. He said words like 'sambo', 'Chocolate drop', 'Nig-nog' and 'brown eyes' which would be classed as racist if we said them in this day and age. This just shows  the different between the old English terms and what they said to colored people.  In one part of the second episode when Eddie Booth segregates the whites from the blacks. He starts to talk about how they can get there country back from the 'blacks' because he think that they are taking over and that there are too many of them. Eddie even said ' why are there so many foreigners in Italy', even when he is the foreigner. But he doesn't see it that way.

Another part in episode 2 the victor leaves and they are represented with a new one. But when Eddie sees who it is you can tell that he is disgraced strait away that he sends a letter the Archbishop because he doesn't want a 'nignog' as a victor. He also says he wants a 'white victor' because he is white himself. His wife Joan Booth disagrees with what Eddie is saying and says 'What difference does it make'.  In the letter that Eddie wrote he said that he Suggests that the church sends its blacks victors back to the jungle'. If some one said this to any mix raced person they would go to prison for being racist, but in those days there was no law for being racist or anything about it.

Eddie isnt the only one being racist it is also it is Bill Reynolds who refers Eddie to as a 'White Honky' (which is just another word for white people) and 'snowflake' which are both racist words to white people as well. So its not just one being racist it is both.

Eddie inst just being racist to colored people it is also the new owner of the corner shop who is from Pakistan. Eddie calls him a 'filthy Paki' because he think he is stealing when he actually isn't.

Overall I think that this program just highlights the differences between what was shown on TV back in the 1970's and how TV has changed up until now. If you watch TV there would never be any mention of back people being different or being called 'Nignogs' because its racism. Overall there is really one main character that is actually being racist and that is Eddie. When Eddie says something racist the audience start to laugh as if it were funny because back then in the 1970's it was funny to them to be racist. But know it is a criminal offence. The words they use that are racist would never be said by the younger generation because they were not brought up with people being racist. But the older generation have been brought up with blacks and whites being different.
